Some key words by Sophie Cavaliero
It is not without a beating heart (1) we wrap up this Photo Book award “in)(between ShaShin Book Award 2014”. 147 books in total of which 141 were validated entries. These 141 books were discussed, reviewed, and discussed again. The Jurorssurly found pleasure while making up their minds, reflecting their taste and experience to select the three winners of this contest. The selection period was a time of passion and confronted viewpoints along with a nice discovery of the current Scene of Japanese Contemporary Photography. The sessions were intense yet full of humour and joy. We thank in)(between gallery, Luigi Clavareau and especially Emako Suzuki for their welcoming and their constant concern to provide professional logistics in organizing this award.
※(1) « Une photographie, c’est un arrêt du coeur d’une fraction de seconde. » (A photograph is a FLATLING for a fraction of a second) Pierre Movila.

26 FINALISTS SELECTED BY THE JURY
in)(between ShaShin Book Award 2014
It was unanimously agreed by all members of the jury
- Wiliness to show the different trends found within the participating books
- A book is not an exhibition or a portfolio...
- The choice would fall on books which tell a story with a clearly identifiable universe, well defined standards in the conception and editing in addition to that little thing that makes it unique and memorable...

008 Hiro Tanaka 「Dew Dew, Dew Its」
For me, this book is a real success in terms of association of images and photographic narrative. The photographs make senses through their association constituting a book that works extremely well besides the fascination, which I have towards the work of the photographer.
008 Hiro Tanaka 「Dew Dew, Dew Its」
Pop and bright aesthetically and thoroughly speaking a real discovery of an universe that has been very often photographed and yet succeeded in making it new and very contemporary in his book.
008 Hiro Tanaka 「Dew Dew, Dew Its」
Fast paced, highly colourful, a raw book that stands out as it intelligently interweaves different sequences “bands on stage, landscape, social scenes,” and takes you to the US in a way that is not only entertaining but also uncovering!
008 Hiro Tanaka 「Dew Dew, Dew Its」
I like this book for its chaotic scenes, concerts and difficult aftermath, the sense of moving from one city to another, always tired and hangover from the night before. Tanaka captures these moments by making direct use of flash, which intensifies the action; it gives me a real visual perception of energy. Soft cover in landscape format works very well with these diptychs well studied; the discrete model and print quality are impeccable.
033 Mi-Yeon「Alone Together」
This one makes me dive into a very troubling privacy. The overall atmosphere of the book is very captivating. I like the simplicity of the story, the delicacy of the images.
033 Mi-Yeon「Alone Together」
Clearly emotional. A lot of tenderness escapes from the book and catches the reader. The Efficiency of images renders them needless of words to express any emotions or aesthetic pleasure, High standards of printing and editing that hold together a well-defined authentic particular world.
033 Mi-Yeon「Alone Together」
This is one of the rare books that have photographs in it where every single of them is so impressive; one loses itself and forgets to have a book in hand. Classically black and white work about “loneliness.” Beautiful and touching.
033 Mi-Yeon「Alone Together」
The feeling I get and I like from “Alone Together” by Mi-Yeon is that I feel that it does not really concern the people she photographed. I feel that she tries to make them transparent, to suspend them in the air to make them merge into the landscape to form another kind of presence at the end. We follow throughout this beautiful coffee table book (well printed and hold together by a delicate design) pictures without any relationship with one another, the delicate sight of a sensitive young person.
035 Jun Fujiyasu 「DZ dizygotic twin」
A book that tells a true visual history, from the first page; we understand the principle of the book and one finds itself scrutinizing each double page in order to find the similarities of these two twin brothers, regardless that at the end, all we see are the differences. In other words, one opens a book believing see two people who look alike and in fact, we only see the differences. I found this to be a brilliant book.
035 Jun Fujiyasu 「DZ dizygotic twins」
Content and format are consistent with the scientific approach of the topic. The idea clearly matches the flow of the choice of images; a black and white statement describing the story behind the pictures.
035 Jun Fujiyasu 「DZ dizygotic twins」
This immediately grabbed my intention. Fascinated by similarity but at closer examination revealing so many little differences that make you go on and on and dig deeper to even find more variants of the “same”. Strikingly simple idea!
0035 Jun Fujiyasu「DZ dizygotic twins」
I like this one because it is disturbing. I took me a little time for actually appreciate it. I had to look at it back and forth several times. Its form is quickly acceptable, elegant layout, paper, and printing of quality, images perfectly aligned as blocks over the pages. It is this rather strict photographic writing, almost medical that required my reading from in-between the photographic lines to grasp the detail and sensitivity, strong fraternal history.
LET’S LISTEN TO EACH JUROR TELLING US ABOUT THIS ADVENTURE
in)(between ShaShin Book Award 2014
Molly BENN
It was exciting to recognize, within these 141 Photo Books, a “photograph” of the current Japanese creation. And if there were many books that passed quickly thru our hands, when one holds a gem; we feel it from “cover and the first pages”; and so I believe that I would hang on to the Intuition to find something beautiful at first sight.
Sophie CAVALIERO
With the book “Révélations”, I had the opportunity to meet a large number of Japanese photographers and confront myself to their creation. With this award, the encounter was different, more surprisingly intimate, entering each universe with an innocent sight; nonetheless, eager to discover. I already knew a number of books yet I reviewed them with new eyes and a new perspective. Opening each book was a moment of delight, a new journey. Thanks to all the photographers who participated.
Josef CHLADEK
“141 books! The number surprised me – and – I was delighted by the quality and how many of those titles I did not know or artists I never heard of! And there were great discoveries among those books; works I would have never ever looked at …I luckily had the chance to put them on the virtual bookshelf. In the end only one, two, three books can win – that was the hard part here as I had 18 close contenders for the 3 finalists spots, but that’s how things are with awards :-)”
Xavier GAUTRUCHE
It is always exciting to be part of the jury in this type of awards. This Award was of particularly high quality and great diversity, it was extremely difficult to put together a trio of winners. All this variety allowed me to plunge with delight in many aspects of this photography and Japanese artistic sensibility which I particularly like.
THE JURY’S SINGLE PERSONAL PICK & THEIR BEST OF
in)(between ShaShin Book Award 2014

Molly’s selection
087"Salaryman Project 2015"
by Bruno QUINQUET
Actually, 087 “SALARYMAN PROJECT 2015” by Bruno QUINQUET, is not my favourite, but it was one of my favourites. I found it both funny and smart to present it in the form of a Daily Planner in order to tell the life of an office worker.

Sophie’s selection
146 "The Slug Book Addendum"
by Masahiko AGAKE
Mainly because of the black cat (just kidding!). I found a real world in this book in which I wanted to immerse myself snorkelling, aiming to experience strange sensations. To me the contrast yields the same effect as the touch of velvet and the shots’ composition is effective immediately including me in his universe. The flow and the selection of the photos are extremely consistent. The choice of cover like those old posters (that I like) takes us back to a former time while having a contemporary composition.

Josef’s selection
To find one or even three books that are best out of nearly 150 is impossible for me. Instead, I made a shortlist of 18 books, which more or less have all the quality to be under the best three. These books stand out for me either because they surprised me by concept, by quality, by darkness or even by humour. I can recommend every single one of them to be part of a good PhotoBook-library!

Xavier’s selection
052 “A Glimmer of Light”
by Takashi KURAYA
My Best Of goes to 052-“A Glimmer of Light” by Takashi KURAYA,I already knew the book (I have bought in Tokyo last summer), This is the first book of a young photographer; I love the narrative style and sensitivity with which he tells the intimate and familial history. The book is well printed and the layout efficiently holds together the images. I look forward to seeing his future work.
