KURAMA

Kurama, a mystic personage somewhat mysterious as described by Henri Robert from PEN Magazine – “Kurama is a mysterious, even mystical artist. Little information is public about him (her), apart from having been born in the 1960s from a multiracial family and had lived all around the world. Kurama’s  photographic practice is much dedicated to social taboos and censorships associated to women sexuality and sexual freedom, subjects that Kurama represents with  erotica offering a clear dive into his (her) intoxicating universe.

PEN MAGAZINE

Kurama – born in the mid-60s into a multiracial family, grew up in different Asian and Western countries, has a Plastic Arts degree in printmaking.

His (her) work is not limited to silver gelatin photography; Kurama uses serigraphy as an alternative printing method.

Kurama’s  photographic practice is much dedicated to social taboos and censorships associated with women sexuality and sexual freedom, subjects that Kurama represents with  erotica offering a clear dive into his (her) intoxicating universe.

Kurama’s exhibitions go back to the late 80s and early 90s with exhibitions in the USA (Chicago, New York and Saint Louis), Osaka Japan at JUJIRU Gallery and in the late 90s in Buenos Aires Argentina.

It is only in 2004 that his (her) works resurfaced this time in Taipei Taiwan with silver gelatin prints of elephants and sex-slaves-workers from Thailand evoking the controversy between divine and adored elephants in the Theravada Buddhism, yet chained and slaved for hard work and tourism  and the beloved women of Thailand equally cherished religious divinities, thus far a large majority lives as sex-workers . Probably that was the origin of his book Elephant, ゾウサン , published in 2016.

The most recent exhibitions date to New York City 2016 at Zurcher Gallery, Paris 2017, 2018, 2019 at in)(between gallery, and 2022 at Incadaques Photo Festival where Kurama’s works were censured by the organizers due to their view on nudity.

Kurama’s publications to be released in 2023 include 3 books (Koumori, erotiCANA and CASCATA ) dedicated to show the path of Erotica and Lust as important elements of protest and how their massive strength can power objection to the cultural suppression of female sexuality, as shown in  his (her) controversial photo book titled KAME SAN – カメさん – Turtle 2018.
