"my memories of younger days in Shinjuku" Koji Onaka

"my memories of younger days in Shinjuku" Koji Onaka

Koji Onaka began his career in 1982 as a freelancer and very early on affirmed his photographic style. His passion for photography comes from his discovery of Daido Moriyama's Tales of Tono series. Stunned by the singularity of his eyes and the feeling of nostalgia emanating from the contrasted prints, he left his hometown of Nogata to join the Tokyo College of Photography where Moriyama taught. His desire to make contact with Moriyama pushes him to make his mark in the world of photography and to join the CAMP Image Shop Group. His black and white images, shaded with smoky gray and then in color, have been the subject of numerous personal and group exhibitions as well as publications in Japan and Europe.

On the sidelines of his personal work, Koji Onaka supports young Japanese photographers, as did the artists of the CAMP in his early days. In charge of KAIDO gallery and the photo magazine of the same name, he also runs the Matatabi publishing.
